Saint Helena Island, one of the largest of the Sea Islands, has provided the most studied body of Negro spirituals first captured in the 1867 publication Slave Songs of the United States. This compilation contained Gullah Geechee-infused texts, rhythms and melodies of the enslaved that drew attention from white audiences, helping to inspire black college touring groups such as the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Hampton Singers. Over the past two decades, leading scholars have connected the Gullah Geechee culture to West and Central Africa, especially the language. In this presentation, I will discuss the early transcriptions by the Slave Songs editors and the Sierra Leone musicologist George Ballanta-Taylor, who visited Saint Helena Island in the early 1920s, giving insight into the manner in which the enslaved sang their songs. Later, I will present my recent transcriptions on Saint Helena Island as a comparative analysis to the historical review and to contemporary spiritual arrangements. I hope to show the audience the extraordinary adaptability of the slave songs but also the immense rhythmic, linguistic, and melodic challenges often overlooked in their performance. Current Gullah Geechee research offers help to those teachers seeking authenticity in performing Negro spirituals and provides a wealth of unexplored music waiting to be performed. When researching the matter further, I found the same journey applied to many of the Black singers in the classical field today. I noticed so many similarities in the struggles to transition not only technically, but mentally, physically, and spiritually as well. In this presentation, we will examine the vocal and cultural habits of growing up singing in the black church, and how that identity strongly influences vocal perception and development. We will also examine the relevance of these influences as it pertains specifically to vocal training and the music industry today. Dr. LaRoche is an active recitalist with regular performances around the country with a special affinity for the discovery of new works and the promotion of works by underrepresented composers. She has had the opportunity to engage as a soloist or clinician with various festivals and arts organizations, including most recently with the Puerto Rico Center for Collaborative Piano, Music on a WIM (Women’s Initiative Music Series), Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, Masterworks Chorus, and Varna International Music Academy, as well as notable past engagements with Greenville Light Opera Works, South Carolina Philharmonic, Bechtler Museum of Art, Palmetto Opera, Firenze Lirico, Columbia Museum of Art, and Abadía Benedictina de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos with other performances in both Spain and Italy. Her opera credits include Micaela (Carmen), Lady with the Cake Box (Postcard from Morocco), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Countess (Le Nozze di Figaro), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) and the title role in Dominick Argento’s Miss Havisham’s Wedding Night. An award-winning vocal artist, Dr. LaRoche has earned praise for her “power, virtuosity…and elegance” with “a thrilling instrument at the top of its range.” She was a 2003 finalist in the Southeast Region Metropolitan Opera Auditions, a 2012 and 2008 NATS Artist Award Regional Finalist and the 2006 Artist of the Year with FBN Productions, Inc. In 2003, she was the Bizet Award winner for the Orpheus National Young Artist Vocal Competition and a Palmetto Opera Competition Finalist in 2005. Currently, Dr. LaRoche is an assistant professor of voice and director of Carolina Music Studios at the University of South Carolina where she has the great privilege to work with eager undergraduate and graduate singers in applied voice, diction, and vocal pedagogy courses. She earned a Doctorate in Musical Arts with a minor in music history as well as a Master of Music from the University of South Carolina, both in Vocal Performance, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Alabama. Committed to arts advocacy, Dr. LaRoche has volunteered much of her time to various community and professional arts organizations. She is an active member of the Pan American Vocology Association (PAVA). From 2014 to 2017, Dr. LaRoche served as a board member for the Hartsville-Coker Concert Association. Since 2013, Dr. LaRoche has served as the judge coordinator of the South Carolina District Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (formerly the National Council Auditions). Dr. LaRoche has been an active member of NATS since 2002 with students regularly participating in district, regional, and national NATS events. She has been a regular adjudicator at all levels of the NSA, presented in district and regional sessions, organized and attended NATS-sponsored events, mentored SNATS chapters, and served as guest clinician for NATS-sponsored masterclasses. Dr. LaRoche served her South Carolina chapter for many years on various committees and as the regular point person for the vetting of musical theatre repertoire before moving on to serve as vice-president and auditions coordinator in 2019. In 2020, Dr. LaRoche teamed up with a fellow NATS member Elizabeth Knight to co-coordinate the first ever unified NATS Summer Program Auditions. Now in their third year, these annual virtual auditions seek to offer singers the opportunity to connect with many summer programs at once without the added expense of travel. In 2022, she participated in the national NATS pedagogy sub-committee work on Supplementary Educational Programs for Science-Informed Voice Pedagogy, which culminated in a workshop presentation for the 2022 NATS National Conference in Chicago, IL. In 2021, Dr. LaRoche began her service as president of the South Carolina district. A Virginia native, Rob’s roles range from Mozart and Rossini to heroic parts in Carmen, Der Fliegende Holländer, Les Troyens, and title roles in Don Carlo and Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Rob has won renown at New York City Opera, Carnegie Hall, Salzburg Summer Festival, London’s Covent Garden, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and Zurich. Recordings include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Bernstein’s Candide, and Richard Strauss’ Die Liebe der Danae; in September 2021, Rob recorded all five Benjamin Britten Canticles with the IN Series Opera of Washington, D.C. In demand as a voice instructor in a variety of genres, Rob held a residency in spring 2021 as Visiting Guest Professor of Voice at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and in 2022 served as master teacher at the prestigious Brevard Music Center program. She has performed a great deal of contemporary chamber music, including Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children, Carter's Syringa with composer in residence, and Ginastera's Cantata para America Magica as well as Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. Her operatic roles have included Alice Ford in Verdi's Falstaff, Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Cherubino in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Baba the Turk in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress under the direction of Robert Altman. In addition to her many recitals, performances have included Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte with the North Carolina Dance Theatre, Mozart's Great c minor Mass under the direction of Carl St. Clair with the Cuyuga Chamber Orchestra (NY) and Handel's Messiah with the Naples Philharmonic (FL). She has received fellowships and scholarships to attend Aspen Music Festival, Banff Center’s Academy of Singing as well as Banff’s Opera Program, and Blossom Music Festival. She also received the prestigious Rackham Fellowship during her tenure at The University of Michigan. Pedigo's teachers and coaches include Leslie Guinn, Martin Katz, Elly Ameling, Håkan Hagegård, Dalton Baldwin and Martin Isepp. Dr. Pedigo earned the Bachelor of Music degree from Illinois Wesleyan University, Master's of Music from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati and Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance from The University of Michigan.
